Numbers Don’t Define You: Cultivating Intrinsic Value
Ever catch yourself checking the numbers just one more time? Likes, comments, open rates, registrations… I know I do. It’s sneaky, how fast we can slide into thinking those numbers say something about us.
When they’re high, I feel a little buzz of validation. When they stall, I start wondering, is something wrong with me, or with what I’m offering? Honestly, I’ve lost whole chunks of time refreshing a screen, waiting for proof that what I’m putting out there matters.
But deep down, I know the truth—and I suspect you do too. Our value doesn’t live in numbers, outcomes, or recognition. The effort, care, and intention behind what we create already mean something. That meaning doesn’t disappear just because someone didn’t click or share.
In fact, your value exists regardless of what you do. Think about it: the alignment of experiences, choices, and chance that brought you to this exact moment is remarkable. Every word you speak, every choice you make, ripples outward in ways you may never see. Every living thing brings value simply by existing — and that includes you. Holding this as a basic assumption is liberating: it frees you to engage in your work with curiosity, presence, and creativity, rather than fear or pressure. When you act from this place, your contributions naturally carry more meaning and impact.
Now, I’m not saying outcomes don’t matter. They do. But tying our worth entirely to what we produce can sap joy, confidence, and creativity — making it harder to contribute meaningfully.
Here are a few practices that help me stay grounded in this truth:
Celebrate the tiny wins. Did you show up today? Take a step, however small? That matters.
Ask for real stories. A trusted friend or client saying, “this helped me” hits deeper than any like.
Notice the invisible impact. Sometimes our words or actions spark growth we’ll never see directly. I like to pause and imagine those ripples.
🌱 Pause, Ponder, Practice
Pause and ponder: What would it mean, if it were true that your value is inherent? What freedom could this give you in your work and daily life? Practice one small experiment that reflects this freedom: a low-pressure action, a playful attempt at something new, or a deliberate pause to act from curiosity instead of obligation. Carry it forward this week and notice the difference it makes.
